Number Tracing Worksheets for Kindergarten
Looking for number tracing worksheets that make practicing numbers 1-20 simple and fun?
Learning to write numbers is an important part of kindergarten, and it takes plenty of practice before some students feel confident. Why I Use Number Tracing Worksheets in Kindergarten
Before children can write numbers independently, they first need to learn the correct number formations.
Number tracing worksheets give students guided practice that helps them:
- learn proper number formation
- recognize numbers more quickly
- build confidence writing numbers independently
- develop consistent handwriting habits
- practice counting alongside number writing
One thing I always noticed in my kindergarten classroom was that students became much more confident when they practiced writing numbers a little each day instead of trying to master them all at once. Just a few minutes of consistent practice made a huge difference!
When to Practice Number Tracing during the School Day
One of my favorite things about practicing number tracing is how easy it is to sprinkle into almost any part of the school day. If number tracing practice is feeling a little dull, try switching it up a little!
Here are a few times to practice number tracing:
Morning Work
A tracing page is a simple way to help students settle into their day while reviewing an important math skill.
Math Centers
Place tracing worksheets in a math center alongside manipulatives like counting cubes, mini erasers, or linking cubes. Students can trace the number first and then build or count the matching quantity.
Independent Practice
Once students start to become familiar with number tracing, tracing worksheets are perfect for independent work once number formation has been introduced.
Small Groups
If a few students need extra support with number writing, take a few minutes to practice together in a small group setting.
Homework
You could also send home number tracing worksheets with your students, especially if your students’ families are looking for simple, no-prep practice at home!
Simple Ways to Make Number Tracing More Fun
Worksheets don’t have to feel boring or repetitive. A few small changes can make number practice much more exciting.
Rainbow Write
Students trace each number several times using different colors.
Dry Erase Practice
Place worksheets inside dry erase sleeves so students can practice again and again.
Count Before You Trace
Have students count manipulatives or pictures before tracing the matching numeral.
Trace Then Write
After tracing the guided examples, encourage students to write the number independently on the back of the page or on a whiteboard.
Use Different Writing Tools
Switch things up by letting students use crayons, markers, colored pencils, or gel pens during center time.

These Number Activity Pages are one of my favorite resources to use throughout the kindergarten year!
Each page focuses on a single number from 1-20, giving students multiple opportunities to practice writing, recognizing, and representing that number in different ways. Instead of only tracing the numeral, students also trace the number word, write the number independently, color the correct number of objects, and more.
This partner activity combines number tracing with a simple spinner activity. Students spin the number and trace it, making practice feel more like a game than a worksheet.
Each mini book focuses on a single number and gives students several opportunities to practice number tracing and writing. There are more pages with other number practice activities, too.
Number Crowns + Tracing Activity
After students have practiced a new number, I love reinforcing that learning with these Number Crowns. Each crown focuses on a single number and includes tracing activities right on the headband, along with other number practice that helps students review what they’ve learned.
They’re a great way to celebrate learning a new number!
