One of my favorite parts of the first week of kindergarten is watching students begin to make new friends and discover things they have in common. A thoughtful All About Me activity gives every child a chance to share something special about themselves while helping classmates build connections from day one. Below, I’ve rounded up four of my favorite kindergarten-friendly activities that are easy to prepare, fun for students, and perfect for creating a welcoming classroom community.
In this post, you’ll find four easy All About Me activities that help students build friendships, practice communication skills, and feel at home in your classroom from the very first week of school.
Why Use All About Me Activities in Kindergarten?
The first few days of kindergarten are about so much more than learning classroom routines. They’re also about making students feel like they belong. A thoughtfully planned All About Me activity gives children the opportunity to share their interests, talk about their families, and celebrate the things that make them unique. At the same time, classmates begin discovering common interests and forming friendships that can last throughout the school year.
Here are a few benefits of All About Me activities:
- Building classroom community
- Helping students get to know one another
- Practicing speaking and listening skills (this is a big one in kindergarten!)
- Boosting confidence
- Learning about your students’ interests and personalities
As a teacher, I always loved using All About Me activities during the first week of school because they helped me get to know my students beyond their names. I learned about their hobbies, favorite books, pets, siblings, and personalities, which made it much easier for me to build relationships and create meaningful connections from the very beginning!
Find Someone Who Likes… Activity
One of my favorite ways to help students start talking to one another is with a Find Someone Who Likes... activity. This is one I designed specifically for kindergarten and all non-readers. Instead of relying on reading skills, students use simple picture prompts to find classmates who share the same interests, making it a wonderful choice for preschool and kindergarten. There’s a coloring-only version that’s perfect for kids who are still learning to write their name, too.

I love that every child can participate confidently in this activity. It’s a fun, low-pressure way to encourage conversations, build friendships, and help students discover what they have in common during those important first days of school.
School Bus Name Craft
One of my favorite first-week projects is this school bus name craft. It’s a fun way for students to practice recognizing and spelling their names while creating something they’re excited about. Plus, it’s an opportunity to put everyone’s names up on the bulletin board.
After assembling their school buses, students add the letters of their names as the bus windows. This craft makes the perfect back to school bulletin board, too! If you have a back to school night where parents stop by after a few days of school, you’ll definitely want to get something up on your bulletin boards!

All About Me Page
An All About Me page is a simple way for students to tell about their favorite things and show part of what makes them unique. It’s also one of my favorite keepsakes from the beginning of the school year because it’s fun to look back and see how much students have grown by the end of kindergarten.
One of my favorite options is the All About Me page from my Welcome to Kindergarten pack. It’s an easy activity that’s perfect for the first week of school!

All About Me Bags
One of my favorite first week traditions was sending home an All About Me bag. Before students left for the day, I attached a simple note to a small paper bag and invited families to help their child choose a couple items to bring back to school. I encouraged students to pack things that told us a little about who they were, such as a favorite book, a small stuffed animal, a family photo, or another special item.

Over the next week or two, we took a few minutes each day for students to share their bags with the class. I loved spreading the presentations out over several days because it gave every child a chance to feel special without taking up an entire morning. More importantly, it gave us time to slow down, listen to one another, and celebrate what made each student unique.
To make this tradition easy to start in your own classroom, I’ve created a free printable All About Me bag tag that you can download below. Simply attach it to a paper bag, send it home with students, and you’ll have everything you need to kick off this favorite first-week activity.
Enter your information below and I’ll send it your way!
These All About Me bag presentations are one of my favorite parts of the first few weeks of school. They remind me that every student walks through the classroom door with their own story, interests, and experiences, and this simple activity helped us start learning about one another from day one.
Enjoy these All About Me Activities!
Remember, you don’t have to do everything during the first week of school. Even choosing one or two meaningful All About Me activities can help students build friendships, gain confidence, and feel excited to come back each morning. However you decide to welcome your new class, I hope these ideas help make those first few days a little easier!
