All About Me Books to Read Aloud in Kindergarten
There’s something special about the first few weeks of kindergarten. Students are making new friends, learning classroom routines, and discovering that every classmate has their own unique story to tell.
Before students can complete an All About Me activity, they need opportunities to think about what makes them unique. That’s one reason I always start with picture books! Great read alouds give children the language, confidence, and inspiration to share about themselves while helping classmates discover what they have in common.
If you’re looking for All About Me books for kindergarten, these are some of my favorite read alouds to share during the beginning of the school year.
My Favorite All About Me Books
1. Chrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes
This is one of my favorite back-to-school read alouds! Chrysanthemum tells the story of a little mouse who loves her unique name until classmates begin teasing her. It’s a wonderful book for discussing names, kindness, and celebrating what makes each student special.
2. What I Like About Me by Allia Zobel
This colorful book encourages children to appreciate the many things that make them unique, from physical characteristics to talents and interests. It’s upbeat, positive, and perfect for helping students recognize that differences make our classroom stronger.
3. I Like Myself! by Karen Beaumont
This story reminds children that they can love themselves exactly as they are. The playful rhymes make it a fun read aloud while reinforcing an important message about confidence and self-acceptance. I love the illustrations, too!
This beautiful book helps children understand that although people may look different or live differently, we all share many of the same feelings and hopes. It’s a wonderful addition to an All About Me unit because it makes a nice connection from “me” to our classroom community.
5. Marvelous Me by Lisa Bullard
This book introduces children to many of the characteristics that make each person unique, both inside and out. It’s an excellent choice for helping students describe themselves!
6. Only One You by Linda Kranz
This heartwarming story reminds children that each person has something special to offer the world. Although it isn’t strictly an All About Me book, its message fits beautifully into lessons about individuality.
7. I Like Me! by Nancy Carlson
This cheerful story celebrates confidence, individuality, and learning to appreciate yourself. It’s another excellent choice for reinforcing positive self-esteem during the first weeks of school, too.
After reading, students could share one thing they’re proud of learning or something they’re excited to learn in kindergarten!
8. Be Who You Are by Todd Parr
This read aloud encourages children to embrace their individuality and be proud of who they are. It has bright and cheerful illustrations that your students will love!
Pair These Books with All About Me Activities!
Reading books is just one piece of helping students get to know themselves and their classmates. After reading these All About Me books, try following up with one of these All About Me activities that encourage students to share about themselves!
