Teaching the alphabet is most effective when students have multiple ways to interact with each letter. The letter Dd is a great one for hands-on learning because it’s full of familiar words that start with the /d/ sound. In this post, I’m sharing a variety of letter d activities that help kindergarten students connect the beginning sound for Dd to print in fun, meaningful ways.
Words that Begin with D
When introducing the letter D, choose words that are familiar to students. Here are some words that are perfect for anchor charts, picture cards, or class discussions about the letter Dd:
- Animals: dog, duck, dolphin, deer, dinosaur
- Objects: dice, desk, door

Make an anchor chart together with these examples and add to it as the week goes on. Encourage students to listen for D words during your lessons, and keep picture cards on display to reinforce the letter throughout the week.

If you’d like a list of anchor chart words for every letter, be sure to download my Letter of the Week lesson plans at the bottom of this post!

Letter D Books
Reading aloud is a simple and powerful way to introduce a new letter. Books allow students to hear the letter sound repeated in context while building vocabulary and comprehension. Here are a few great read alouds for the letter D, and you can also click here for a list of more letter D books:

Letter D Activities
Mixing hands-on activities and games with printables in your letter D lessons keeps students engaged and gives them more opportunities to practice the /d/ sound. Some of my favorite letter D activities include:
Letter D Mystery Bag: Gather a group of objects that start with the letter D and put them in a bag. Give students a clue to guess what each object is. For example, “I have something that starts with /d/. It is round with a hole in the middle and we eat it for breakfast. (donut)”

Letter D Coloring Page: This is the page I use on day one or day two of each week. I like that it has examples of the letter and an opportunity to practice letter tracing. Sometimes we just color the top part and save the tracing until after I’ve modeled how to trace the letter.

Letter D Mini Book: Mini books are one of my favorite activities. My students love having these little books to make and take home. In the letter D mini book, they can trace and write the letter, plus practice letter ID and color pictures that start with the /d/ sound.

Letter D Crafts
Crafts give students a creative way to practice letter recognition while also strengthening fine motor skills. Here are a few simple and fun letter D craft ideas:
Letter D Dog Craft: Students can turn a letter d into this darling dog with eyes, ears, and dots!

Paper Tearing Activity: Tearing paper is a fun way to build fine motor strength. Students tear a strip of paper into small pieces and glue them onto the donut to fill it in.

Tips for Success
- Use repetition – Review the /d/ sound daily using songs, chants, and quick games.
- Connect to real life – Point out the letter D in student names, classroom labels, and books. For example, have students write the letter D on a sticky note and have them stick it on something in the classroom that starts with D, such as “door” or “desk”.
