Activities for Teaching About the Letter B

When you’re teaching the alphabet, it’s always helpful to have a variety of hands-on, meaningful activities ready for your students. The letter B is a fun one because it’s easy to find words, books, and activities that naturally fit into your lessons. Today, I’m sharing ideas for letter B activities that will make learning interactive and enjoyable for your kindergarteners!

Words That Begin with B

When introducing a new letter, it helps to highlight words that are simple, familiar, and easy to picture. For the letter Bb, stick with concrete nouns your students already know and can see around them. At this point in our year, I also like to avoid words that begin with a blend.  Here are some good choices:

  • Animals: bear, bird, bat, bunny, bee
  • Objects: ball, book, bed, bike, bus
  • Food: banana, burger, berries, bagel

You can refer to a word wall, use picture cards, or simply brainstorm with your class and create an anchor chart together. Keep these words handy to reinforce the /b/ sound throughout the week.

Letter B Books

Books are the perfect starting point for any letter study. Reading aloud builds background knowledge, introduces vocabulary, and helps students hear the target letter in context. Click here for a list of my favorite read alouds about the letter Bb!

Activities to Teach About the Letter B

Learning the alphabet doesn’t have to be limited to paper-and-pencil practice. Combining hands-on activities and games with worksheets in your letter B lessons keeps students engaged and helps them really practice the /b/ sound. Some of my favorite activities for the letter B include:

Letter B Bulldozer Craft: Make this adorable bulldozer craft! It has kid-friendly templates and will delight your students!

Use Literacy Centers to Practice the Letter Bb: Set up literacy centers with activities for the letter Bb. For example, one center could have students sort letters that are and are not B, while another center could focus on building the letter Bb with playdough.

Tips for Success

  • Repetition Matters: Practice letter sounds daily through songs and chants. If it’s not already part of your morning routine, start today! It’s a natural way to review the same words and activities throughout the week.
  • Connect to Daily Life: I like to call this the “Power of Curiosity”. When you see something in a book or the classroom that starts with Bb, pause and point it out. Say something like, “Ooh, do you know what I just noticed? This chart by the door has the word “bus” and I hear that /b/ sound in the word “bus”.”
