Teaching the alphabet becomes so much more meaningful when you combine hands-on learning with intentional practice activities. The letter Cc is an exciting one for kindergarteners because it’s packed with fun, familiar words that lead to lots of creative activities. Today I’m sharing a variety of letter C activities that will help your students practice connecting sounds to print in fun, meaningful ways.
Words That Begin with C
When introducing the letter C, choose words that are simple, visual, and easy to connect to students’ daily lives. Remember that C can make both a hard and soft sound, and I would start with the hard /c/ sound (as in cat or car). Here are some great examples:
- Animals: cat, cow, camel, caterpillar
- Objects: car, cup, can, coat
- Food: corn, cake, carrot, candy

Create a class anchor chart with these examples and others, and encourage students to listen for C words throughout the activities you do. Displaying picture cards for the letter during your lessons is also really helpful!

Letter C Books
Reading aloud is one of the best ways to introduce a new letter and its sound. Books bring the letter to life through familiar characters, pictures, and sound repetition. Here are a few great choices for the letter C, and click here for a list of all my favorite read alouds for C!

Activities to Teach About the Letter C
Learning the alphabet doesn’t have to stop at paper-and-pencil practice. Mixing motivating activities and games with printables in your letter C lessons keeps students excited to learn and helps them really focus on the /c/ sound. Some of my favorite activities for the letter C include:
Letter C Cat Craft: Students can turn a letter C into this adorable cat with whiskers, ears, and a tail.

Paper Tearing Activity: Paper tearing is a great way to strengthen fine motor skills. Students will take a strip of paper, tear it into small pieces, and glue the pieces onto the carrot shape.

Letter C Mystery Bag: Collect a group of objects that start with the letter C in a bag. Give students a clue to guess what each object is. For example, “I have something that starts with /c/. It is orange and rabbits like to eat it. (carrot)”

Clap for C Words – Say a list of words aloud, and have students clap only when they hear a word beginning with /c/.
Use Literacy Centers to Practice the Letter Cc: Provide learning stations with hands-on activities to practice the letter C. For example, one center could have students sort letter beads that are and are not C. Another center could be using a bingo dauber to “dot” the letter C (here are some pages that work great for this!).

Tips for Success
- Practice, Practice, Practice!: Build daily letter sound practice into your routine with songs, chants, and short reviews. Consistent repetition helps students retain what they’ve learned and recognize familiar words with confidence.
- Connect to Daily Life: Be endlessly curious! When you see something in a book or the classroom that starts with C, pause and point it out. Say something like, “Friends, do you know what I just noticed? I’m holding my coffee cup, and I hear two good /c/ sounds: /c/ /c/ coffee, and /c/ /c/ cup!”
