Disguise a Turkey Activity for November

Looking for a fun Thanksgiving activity that blends creativity, writing, and seasonal silliness? Try having your students disguise a turkey! This classic project is a favorite among kindergarten and first grade teachers because it gets students thinking, creating, and writing, all while having tons of fun. My Disguise a Turkey activity makes it simple to bring this tradition to your classroom with built-in differentiation and everything you need for both in-class and take-home options.

Why I Love This “Disguise a Turkey” Activity

There’s something magical about letting kids disguise a turkey. The idea of helping a turkey “hide” from Thanksgiving dinner brings so much laughter and imagination!

Here’s what makes this activity a winner:

  • It’s creative and hands-on. Students get to color, cut, and glue their disguises, which keeps little hands busy and engaged.
  • It builds writing confidence. After creating their turkeys, students write about their disguises using the included writing pages. This part is differentiated, so you can make it as tailored to your students’ needs as possible!
  • It’s easy to adapt. Whether you want to make this a family take-home project or a fun classroom lesson, you’ll find everything you need inside the pack.
  • It’s differentiated. The resource includes multiple writing page options so every student can participate at their own level.

Classroom Ideas for “Disguise a Turkey” Activities

Kick things off with a fun turkey-themed read-aloud like Turkey Trouble by Wendi Silvano or Run, Turkey, Run! by Diane Mayr. This helps set the stage and gets everyone giggling about the idea of a turkey trying to hide. I have a blog post about my favorite Thanksgiving and turkey read alouds that you can view by clicking here!

Show students your own example! You might disguise your turkey as a superhero, a ballerina, or even yourself as the teacher. Kids love seeing your creativity, and it helps spark their own ideas.

Once students have chosen a disguise, they can color, cut, and glue the pieces. Then they’ll use their writing page to write about their turkey. Encourage them to share with the class or a partner.

Hang the finished turkeys in the hallway or on a classroom bulletin board with a fun title like “Our Turkeys Are in Disguise!” or “You Can’t Catch These Turkeys!”

If you’d like to send the project home, use the editable family letter included in the resource. It’s an easy way to get families involved, and it’s always fun when students bring their disguised turkeys back to share with the class.
