Monarch Butterfly by Gail Gibbons
Here’s a nonfiction picture book that introduces young learners to the life cycle of the monarch butterfly. It also covers the monarch’s remarkable migration journey and includes directions on raising your own monarch at home. It goes into a bit more detail than many of the other books on this list, so plan a little more time!

One Little Butterfly by Lesley Sims
This hands-on board book beautifully illustrates the butterfly’s life cycle. The book has interactive elements that accompany the simple text. Be sure to add it to your classroom library so students can take a closer look!

Explore My World: Butterflies by Marfe Ferguson Delano
Here’s another great National Geographic Kids book that provides a great introduction to butterfly facts. It has wonderful photographs and engaging text that will keep your students’ attention.

A Butterfly’s Life by Dona Herweck Rice
This is a very simple yet informative book. If you need a quick book to fill a few minutes, this is perfect! It’s also a good introduction to butterfly vocabulary. Your students will also likely recognize several sight words in this book.

Life Cycle of a Butterfly by Karen Latchana Kenney
This book presents lots of information in small, organized chunks. There are also great photographs throughout the book. It has descriptive language that makes it a really great read aloud, in my opinion!

My, Oh My – A Butterfly! All About Butterflies by Tish Rabe
If your students love The Cat in the Hat, give this read aloud a try! It is all about butterflies, of course, but with a rhyming twist. I will say that it’s a little on the longer side, but your students will like the rhyming and pictures!

A Butterfly’s Life Cycle by Mary R. Dunn
Here’s a fabulous read aloud! It has large photographs and just enough information on each page to keep your students interested.

The Amazing Life Cycle of Butterflies by Kay Barnham
Grab this book for the adorable illustrations alone! The book follows two children as they learn about butterflies. It gives lots of great information about butterflies, as well as information about butterfly gardens.

The Life Cycle of a Butterfly by Bobbie Kalman
If you’re looking for a book that’s a little more advanced, give this one a try! There is a lot more information and text presented on each page. It also goes into a lot more detail about migration, habitats, and butterfly gardens.
