Why I Love First Day of Kindergarten Crowns
As many of you already know, I just love kindergarteners in crowns! For so many reasons, this first day of kindergarten crown is one of my favorites.
Students love coloring and decorating their own crowns, and once everyone has finished, they proudly wear them around the classroom for the rest of the day. It instantly adds to the excitement while helping everyone feel like they’re part of the class.
As a teacher, I also love that these crowns are quick to prepare and require very few supplies. Just print, color, cut, staple, and they’re ready to wear! They also make adorable first day of school photos and become a special keepsake that families can save for years to come.

How to Use the First Day of Kindergarten Crowns
One of my favorite things about this activity is how easy it is, which is essential on the first day of kindergarten! Simply print the crown, have students color and cut it out, then staple or attach a strip of construction paper or a sentence strip to fit each child’s head. Once everyone is wearing their finished crowns, don’t forget to snap a few photos!
Here are a few simple ideas for ways to use your first day of kindergarten crown in the classroom:
- Place the crowns on student tables before school begins as a welcoming morning activity.
- Have students color and decorate their crowns after you’ve finished morning routines.
- Read a favorite back-to-school picture book while students work on their crowns.
- Take individual or whole-class photos while everyone is wearing their crowns.
- Send the crowns home at the end of the day as a special keepsake for families.
Because this activity requires simple, familiar tasks like coloring and cutting, it gives students a chance to relax, be creative, and build confidence during a day that’s filled with so many new experiences.
